SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois wildlife officials have discovered several hundred young invasive Silver Carp in the Illinois River approximately 80 miles from Lake Michigan, marking the farthest north that juvenile Silver Carp have been documented since intensive monitoring began in 2010.
The discovery, announced Monday by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), is raising new concerns about whether invasive carp have successfully reproduced farther upstream than previously documented and comes as work on a major project designed to prevent the fish from reaching the Great Lakes remains halted.
Sampling crews collected the 4- to 6-inch-long Silver Carp in the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River during routine intensive monitoring. IDNR said the discovery could indicate that spawning occurred farther upstream or in one of the river's tributaries.
The finding is significant because juvenile fish provide evidence of reproduction. Fish biologists generally consider an invasive carp population established when multiple life stages, including young and adult fish, are present.

Silver Carp require flowing water to reproduce. Their semi-buoyant eggs can remain suspended in the current and travel considerable distances before hatching and developing into juvenile fish.
IDNR is now expanding its investigation, including additional monitoring in the upper Illinois River and tributaries and intensive electrofishing in backwater areas where young carp may be present. Officials also plan to examine the micro-chemistry of captured fish to help determine where they originated.
The department also plans to increase monitoring in the Dresden Island Pool, approximately 50 miles from Lake Michigan.
The Illinois River already has established populations of invasive carp in its lower reaches. According to Illinois Department of Natural Resources, multiple life stages have been documented along roughly 240 miles of the river extending south from the Peoria Pool toward its confluence with the Mississippi River. North of Peoria, adult invasive carp have been detected, but the discovery of juvenile silver carp represents a new development.
A threat to the Great Lakes.
The Illinois River is part of a human-made waterway system connecting the Mississippi River Basin with the Great Lakes. That connection allows aquatic species to potentially move between the two major watersheds.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies invasive species as a major threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem and economy. More than 180 aquatic non-native species are established in the Great Lakes basin, with approximately 34% classified as invasive. Federal and state agencies have made preventing invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes a major priority.
Silver and Bighead Carp are particularly concerning because they can compete with native fish for food and alter aquatic food webs. Silver Carp can also create safety concerns for boaters because they can leap from the water when disturbed.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says coordinated efforts involving federal agencies, states, Tribes and other partners are intended to prevent invasive carp from moving through the Illinois Waterway into the Great Lakes. Its 2026 invasive carp plan specifically identifies the Brandon Road Inter-basin Project near Joliet as a major defense against movement of aquatic invasive species from the Mississippi River Basin into the Great Lakes.
Brandon Road project remains in question.
The discovery comes at a particularly important time because construction on the Brandon Road Inter-basin Project has been interrupted.
The approximately $1.15 billion project near Joliet is designed to use a series of engineered measures and deterrent technologies to prevent invasive carp and other aquatic nuisance species from moving farther upstream toward Lake Michigan.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a work-stoppage order July 24 while the project underwent an administrative review. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has called for the work stoppage to be reversed, arguing that the project is critical to protecting the Great Lakes.
The project is a partnership involving Illinois, Michigan, and the federal government. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2026 Invasive Carp Plan says construction began following a 2024 agreement between the states and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The timing of the work stoppage has become more significant following the latest discovery.
"Young" fish this far upstream provide wildlife officials with evidence that reproduction may have occurred closer to Lake Michigan than previously documented. That does not mean invasive carp have reached Lake Michigan, but it does increase the urgency of determining how far the population has expanded.
Intensive monitoring continues.
Illinois and federal agencies have spent years combining commercial fishing, electrofishing, environmental DNA sampling and other monitoring techniques to detect invasive carp before they can become established in the upper Illinois Waterway.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported that intensive monitoring in 2025 found no bighead or silver carp in the Chicago-area waterway, while targeted removal programs eliminated approximately 7 million pounds of invasive carp from portions of the Illinois River.
Those efforts will now be expanded in response to the Marseilles Pool discovery.
IDNR said commercial fishing targeting adult invasive carp in the Starved Rock, Marseilles and Dresden Island pools is expected to resume in September, when cooler water temperatures make those removal operations more effective.
A warning for the Great Lakes.
The discovery does not establish that Silver Carp have entered Lake Michigan. Instead, it provides new evidence that invasive carp reproduction may be occurring farther upstream in the Illinois River system.
That distinction is important because preventing an established population from reaching the Great Lakes is substantially easier than trying to remove one after it becomes established.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative continues to identify invasive species prevention as a priority because the Great Lakes represent a potential invasion pathway into the Mississippi River watershed and dozens of states beyond the Great Lakes Basin.
For Illinois wildlife officials, the immediate priority is determining where the juvenile carp came from, how widespread the young fish are and whether additional spawning occurred farther upstream.
The answers could help determine how much closer invasive carp have moved toward Lake Michigan — and how urgent efforts to block their advance must proceed.
