The current flag has had a Native American on horseback in the background, symbolizing Minnesota’s Native American heritage, while a pioneer uses a plow in the foreground. Some saw it as a “Native person being forced off their land.” Others are upset that Native people are not on the flag anymore.

26-hundred proposals were submitted. The winning flag's design features two tones of blue with a star, symbolizing the North Star State.  Minnesota is home to 11 Federally Recognized Tribes. The new flag should become official on May 11.
