A proposed expansion of the 906 City Trail system in Schoolcraft County could create a new legal route for ORV and snowmobile riders traveling into Manistique, with the trail planned to connect directly to Kewadin Casino Manistique.
The Schoolcraft County Motorized Trails Association (SCMTA) says the project is in its early planning stages and is being developed in cooperation with Kewadin Casino Manistique and other local and state partners.
The proposed extension would begin where the existing trail currently ends on Tannery Road. Working with Canadian National Railway Company, planners have identified a potential safe crossing of the railroad tracks. The trail would then connect to Krummich Road and continue along the outskirts of the Schoolcraft County Airport while meeting Federal Aviation Administration requirements.
The planned route would eventually end at Kewadin Casino, providing ORV and snowmobile riders with legal access to the casino and surrounding businesses.
SCMTA says the project has already attracted participation from Kewadin Casino Manistique, Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Schoolcraft County, the City of Manistique and Manistique Township.
The organization says the extension would provide a new eastern entrance into Manistique for riders while also creating opportunities for increased tourism and economic activity.
Although the proposed trail would not directly connect to another numbered trail system, SCMTA says riders could use county roads to reach other Upper Peninsula trail systems, including routes toward Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace.
SCMTA describes the proposal as a major project that could benefit recreation, tourism and businesses throughout Schoolcraft County.
The project is still in the planning and development stage, and a construction timeline has not yet been announced. Additional coordination, approvals and funding will be required before construction can begin.
SCMTA is encouraging businesses and individuals interested in supporting the project to become involved. The organization holds member meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 300 New Delta Ave. in Manistique.
