ST. IGNACE, Mich. — Community members, water protectors, tribal citizens, and supporters from across the Great Lakes region are invited to gather in St. Ignace on Saturday, Aug. 29, for "Paddle for the Future," a flotilla and community event focused on protecting the Great Lakes and raising awareness about the proposed continued operation of Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline.
Hosted by The Sault Tribe and Sacred Waterways, the event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Kiwanis Beach in St. Ignace.
Organizers describe the gathering as a peaceful community event centered on protecting water and celebrating Sault Tribe Culture while calling for an end to Line 5's operation beneath the Straits of Mackinac.
The morning's activities are scheduled to include:
- A traditional Water Ceremony.
- Community rally.
- Kayaking and flotilla on the water.
- Traditional foods.
- Drumming.
- Art activities.
The event is open to the public, and organizers encourage attendees to bring their own feast bundle. Participants of all ages are welcome.
The "Paddle for the Future" gathering reflects ongoing efforts by Northern Michigan Tribes and environmental advocates to protect the Great Lakes while highlighting the cultural and spiritual importance of clean water. Similar paddling events have become a symbol of peaceful advocacy for safeguarding the region's waterways.
