Twenty-one Tribal Members sought seats on the Sault Tribe Board of Directors, and an estimated 8,274 Tribal Members participated in the Primary Election.
Significant changes took place in Units Three and Four, where the current board members representing those units did not advance to the General Election ballot.
Approximately 2,783 votes were cast for candidates who did not move on to the General Election. Those numbers suggest that the outcome of the board races is still far from certain. In addition, many Tribal Members who did not participate in the Primary are expected to vote in the General Election.
Editorial Comment — “In My View”
One of the most important issues facing both the newly elected and current board members is the ongoing revision of the draft Constitution.
A key question remains: Will the Sault Tribe Board allow Tribal Members to vote on each proposed constitutional amendment separately, or will all proposed changes be combined into a single vote?
Tribal Members are encouraged to ask their Unit Representative candidates and current Sault Tribe Board Members to support separate votes on each constitutional change. The decisions made today will impact the next seven generations.
