You can run a Business without Employees. The Steady Rise of the Non-employer Business.

July 31, 2025.   The Steady Rise of the Non-Employer Business.

Thinking of starting your own business?  While many organizations want to brag about their large number of employees, the new trend for success long-term business plans is to use sub-contractors instead of employees.  This practice allows you to start your business with lower overhead and reduces your risk.

Another risk reducing measure to consider if your goal is to own your own business but you can't afford to start your own full time business is to start a part-time business while you continue to work at your current job.  Need proof that this can work for you? Just look at the research.  In July the U.S. Census reported that the total number of U.S. non-employer establishments increased every year from 1997 to 2023 except during the financial crisis in 2008, according to the newly released Non-employer Statistics.  Currently in Silicon Valley Business Consultants are reporting that there is an informal contest waging to be the first billionaire business with no employees working from home.

The U.S. Census Bureau data show annual growth of non-employer establishments (those with no paid employees) almost always outpaced that of employer businesses (those with at least one paid employee). Non-employers also represented a larger share of all U.S. businesses each year from 1997 to 2023.

From 2012 to 2023, the total number of non-employers grew an average 2.7% annually, while employers averaged only 1.1% growth year-over-year. During this same time-frame, non-employers’ share of all U.S. businesses grew by 3%, shrinking employers’ share from 24.6% to 21.6%.

The most important thing in starting a business is finding something that you love to do that supports your lifestyle.  That is your purpose.
